Diljit Dosanjh’s concert breached noise limit, Chandigarh informs Punjab and Haryana High Court

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday, December 18, was informed that noise levels at singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh’s recent concert in Chandigarh exceeded the permissible limits under the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules.

According to the Chandigarh Administration, the Deputy Commissioner of Chandigarh had constituted three teams to ensure compliance with the court’s earlier directive. The directive required that noise levels at the boundary of the concert venue not exceed the ambient air quality standard of 75 decibels. Despite these measures, the noise levels surpassed the prescribed limits.

The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (South) has since written to the Secretary, Environment, Chandigarh Administration, requesting further action under Section 15 of the Environment Protection Act.

The High Court has adjourned the matter for further hearing in January.

This development follows the court’s approval of Diljit Dosanjh’s December 14 event at the Sector 34 exhibition ground, provided it complied with noise pollution regulations. A division bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Kshetarpal had emphasised that noise levels should not exceed 75 decibels at the venue boundary.

The court had also directed authorities to take penal action against the organizers if this limit was breached.

The hearing stemmed from a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by a Chandigarh resident, who sought better regulation of public events held at the Sector 34 ground.

Diljit Dosanjh’s concert was part of his Dil-Luminati Tour, which began in Delhi in October this year.
