Identifying and resolving disputed areas on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) to avoid any future confrontations, resumption of patrolling by troops in parts of eastern Ladakh and resolution of pending issues are likely to be some of the points to be raised by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval during talks with the Chinese Foreign Minister in Beijing on Wednesday.
Doval reached Beijing for talks on Wednesday between the Special Representatives of the two countries with a small team of officials accompanying him, government officials said. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi will represent Beijing at the Special Representative-level talks.
The talks will be held after both sides agreed and implemented the decisions on disengagement in Demchok and Depsang in Ladakh, a major breakthrough in ending the over four-year-long military standoff, which began after Indian and Chinese troops were engaged in a violent confrontation in Galwan Valley in May 2020.
Both countries have also started coordinated patrolling. India Today TV has got exclusive information from top government sources about how the talks regarding disengagement between India and China in Dapsang and Demchok took place.
Apart from 21 rounds of Corps Commander-level talks between the two countries, several talks were also held at the high diplomatic level. Many times, talks came to a standstill during the Corps Commander-level talks. In such a situation, avenues of dialogue were opened at the diplomatic level.
But in the last four years of deliberations, India did not bow down to China’s pressure at any level and remained steadfast in its stand regarding disengagement in Dapsang and Demchok.
India made it clear to China in military and diplomatic-level talks that it should restore to the April 2020 status in the Galwan Valley, only then would disengagement be possible.
In the past five years, China has been rattled by India’s increasing power on the global stage. Beijing was under pressure from the successful hosting of the G20 summit by New Delhi last year. Apart from the G20, India’s importance in BRICS, SCO and Quad also forced China to retreat.
India Today TV has also learned that New Delhi is in no hurry for the next step of deescalation in the current circumstances. The military infrastructure that India has built in Ladakh in the past five years cannot be removed abruptly. India currently wants to maintain military and diplomatic pressure on China.
Following earlier high-level talks between Doval and Wang in Russia’s St Petersburg, both sides agreed to expedite efforts to resolve the remaining border disputes and improve bilateral relations.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had also said that 75 per cent of the issues in the region had been addressed and hoped for a full resolution soon.
