Telugu actor Allu Arjun may have to spend the night in jail as there was a delay in the release of his interim bail order in a case over the stampede at the premiere of his film Pushpa 2: The Rule. As the actor’s release was delayed, hundreds of his supporters gathered outside the jail in Hyderabad and protested.
Allu Arjun was arrested from his residence in the morning, and a lower court sent him to judicial custody for 14 days. Shortly after, he was granted interim bail. However, reports suggest that the bail order copies have not yet been uploaded online.
Deputy Commissioner of Telangana Police A Srinivas has said that the 41-year-old star is likely to be released on Saturday.
According to sources, the jail authorities have prepared a Class-1 barrack at Chanchalguda Jail for Allu Arjun.
A 35-year-old woman died, and her eight-year-old son was hospitalised on December 4 during a stampede-like situation at the Sandhya Theatre in Hyderabad, where thousands of fans jostled to catch a glimpse of the actor at the premiere of a blockbuster movie.
Following the incident, the city police registered a case against Allu Arjun, his security team, and the theatre management under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), based on a complaint lodged by the woman’s family.
The national award-winning actor was taken to the Chikkadpally police station in a police vehicle in a sudden development that shocked his fans and surprised others. He was produced before the Nampally court, which remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody. He was subsequently shifted to jail under heavy security.
The actor then moved the High Court, which granted interim bail for four weeks, observing that, despite being an actor, he had the right to life and liberty as a citizen. Justice Juvvadi Sridevi noted that the actor cannot be prima facie held responsible for the incident since he had simply gone to the theatre for the premiere of his movie.
Allu Arjun had approached the Telangana High Court seeking to quash the FIR registered against him.
