Colin Farrell Wins Golden Globe For Best Acting In A Limited Series For ‘The Penguin’

Colin Farrell won the Golden Globe for Best Acting in a Limited Series for his work in The Penguin.

Despite how popular they are with general audiences, comic book movies and TV shows are still often seen as a bit of an outside entity in the film industry. There has been no shortage of think pieces comparing the genre to amusement parks or hailing the death of Marvel and DC. This has left the projects feeling neglected at awards shows like the Golden Globes or the Oscars in all but a few categories like costuming and VFX.

That all to say, almost nobody was expecting Colin Farrell to win Best Actor in an Anthology, Limited Series, or TV Movie at the Golden Globes for his role in The Penguin. This makes Farrell one of merely three actors to win an award for a role in a comic book movie, joining Joaquin Phoenix for his role in Joker and Heath Ledger for his role in The Dark Knight. Yet when reflecting on his win, Farrell admits he doesn’t feel he stacks up to his predecessors.

“You mentioned two actors who are, I think, for my money, two of the most extraordinarily talented and gifted and just brilliant artists in films that I’ve ever had the fortune to observe and be affected by,” Farrell explained in a comment to Variety following his Golden Globes win. “What Heath did in Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight was extraordinary, and will will live on for future generations. And what [Phoenix] did with the Joker was as as exemplified by all the awards that he won, in the Oscars. It was extraordinary.”

“It was so special, both of them. So to have your name just uttered in the same sentence as those performances, honestly, it’s lovely, but still I’m more of just a fan of it all! I don’t feel like I’m part of that pantheon. Joaquin and Heath, just two extraordinary and honest great actors.”

Colin Farrell’s Future As The Penguin

Unlike most actors to win an award for their role in a comic book movie, Colin Farrell’s journey as The Penguin is far from over. The actor is already gearing up to return as Oz Cobb in The Batman Part II, which is finally set to begin filming later this year in spite of numerous delays pushing it back to 2027. Farrell revealed that, while he only has a few scenes in the highly-anticipated sequel, he’s excited to put on the monocle once again.

As for The Penguin series itself, things are looking good when it comes to chances for a season 2. Matt Reeves revealed he’s currently in talks with showrunner Lauren LeFranc to bring Colin Farrell back to the small screen to reprise his now award winning comic book role. It’s unclear when a second season of the show would release given how long the gap has been between installments for The Batman franchise, but fans would likely be lucky to see it before 2028.

The Penguin is now streaming on HBO. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe and make sure to stay tuned to our YouTube channel for more content.
