Karnataka: DK Shivakumar reviews preparations for Congress Working Committee meeting in Belagavi – Karnataka News

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary KC Venugopal on Tuesday reviewed preparations for the upcoming Congress Working Committee’s meeting in Belagavi.

The Congress Working Committee meeting is scheduled to be held in Belagavi on December 26 and 27. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, other Congress MPs, chief ministers, and MLAs will attend the event.

Notably, the 39th session of the Congress was held at Belagavi, and it was the only Congress session to be presided over by Mahatma Gandhi.

Calling it a “historic blessing”, Shivakumar said, “When Mahatma Gandhi became the Congress president, Gangadhar Deshpande (Congress leader from Belagavi) and Jawaharlal Nehru were the General Secretaries. At that time, Deshpande invited Gandhi to hold the AICC session in Belagavi.”

“A hundred years later, Mallikarjun Kharge, who hails from Karnataka, is the Congress president,” he said.

He said that while there were discussions about holding the session at Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat, Shivakumar proposed Belagavi, and it was approved.
